The GX460 was Lexus's bulletproof V8 swan song, silky, plush, and routinely hitting 200k miles with minimal drama. The 2024 redesign swapped that proven engine for a twin-turbo V6 that tows hard but drinks just as much fuel, then wrapped it in a cheaper interior that owners call 'un-Lexus-like' and plagued the first year with brake squeal (8+ month backorder on parts), hood flutter, and falling headliners. If you need genuine off-road capability or 9,000-lb towing, the GX550 delivers; if you want the on-road luxury the badge promises at this price, a lightly used GX460 or a German unibody will leave you happier.

The generation that matters
This product isn't one story — here's how each era is regarded.
GX 470 (2003–2009)
2003–2009
Solid
Praised for durability and reliability ('runs like a top' at 300k miles), but buyers must check for rusted frames (especially under passenger door), timing belt service history, and KDSS system condition. Parts are expensive.
GX 460 (2010–2023)
2010–2023
Strong
Widely regarded as the last high-quality V8 Lexus GX — 'never been happier' with a 2023 V8. Owners praise silky smooth V8, incredible ride quality, plush interior, and zero creaks/rattles even at high mileage. Many recommend buying lightly used CPO over the new model.
GX 550 (2024–present)
2024–present
Mixed
Redesign praised for off-road capability and styling, but criticized for cost-cutting (cheaper interior vs GX 460, less sound deadening, hood flutter, brake squeal), first-year build quality issues, and barely improved MPG despite V8-to-turbo-V6 switch. 'Un-Lexus-like' — feels more Toyota than luxury. Strong GX550-to-X5/Cayenne trade pipeline. Wait recommended for bugs to be worked out.

Scores are percentile ranks: 5.0 is the median product in existence. 8.5+ is reserved for genuinely exceptional products (top ~10%). The score reflects consensus quality, what owners say about the product. Risk is tracked separately and shown above the summary when present. Both are calculated deterministically, so the same signals always produce the same score.
